interesting article
I just read this on my local newspaper's web site:
Clues to mental illness
Genetic variants linked to mania and depression are under study; may lead to treatments
I'll look for a place where it might be more of a permanent link, because I know in a week or so the article will become a paid-only link on the Newsday website.
The most interesting part of the study is that SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors - eg, Prozac or Celexa) didn't seem to help the "depressed" mice. This might help explain why some people don't respond to these medications. I believe that depression may have several different causes, and the closer science gets to discovering what these various causes are, the closer we'll get to being able to help everyone who has depression.
